A landscape shaped by springs

More than a sea of green

Clover Valley Fen protects spring-fed peat mounds surrounded by sedge meadow in Walworth County. Slowly flowing springs and accumulated plant material have helped shape this distinctive wetland.

From a distance, the photographs show an open sweep of grasses and sedges. Look closer and the scene becomes a mosaic of plant textures, pockets of water, and flowers rising above the greenery.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources owns the fen, which became a State Natural Area in 1987.

Summer color

Lilies above the meadow

Michigan Lily flowers stand out against the green surroundings, with spotted orange petals curling back above dangling stamens. A second view includes the unopened buds alongside the flowers.

Prairie Loosestrife adds small yellow blossoms on slender stems, while Swamp Milkweed gathers its pink flowers into dense clusters. Together, these photographs offer a closer look at the summer color within the larger landscape.
