Spring-fed wetlands, flower-filled prairie, and a remarkable story of restoration in Elgin, Illinois.
These photographs from my past visits celebrate the plants, wildlife, and changing scenery of Bluff Spring Fen—and the work that has helped protect them.

A landscape shaped by water
A fen is a wetland fed by mineral-rich groundwater. Here, water filters through sand, gravel, and stone, picking up minerals before emerging in springs. Those alkaline conditions support a distinctive plant community, including Kalm’s Lobelia.
The surrounding prairie, savanna, woodland, and glacial gravel hills add even more variety. Looking across the preserve is only the beginning; much of its character is in the small flowers and creatures along the way.

Decades of care
Mining, dumping, and off-road vehicles once damaged this landscape. Volunteers began a major turnaround in 1980, clearing debris and invasive plants. In 1990, an entire remnant hill prairie was transplanted here to save it from destruction.
Later restoration addressed the land’s shape and water flow, helping protect the groundwater that sustains the fen. In December 2014, Chicago Wilderness recognized the preserve and its conservation partners with its highest restoration accreditation: Platinum.

The details that make this place memorable
White Lady’s-slippers, blue gentians, milkweeds, lilies, and prairie flowers are among the subjects in my photographs. This collection spans different visits and seasons; these flowers won’t all be blooming at once.
The Forest Preserves reports that volunteers and bio-blitz participants have recorded 450 plant species at the preserve—a striking measure of the variety supported by its different habitats.
