Plumage & Identification
More than a white breast
A blue-gray back, pale face, dark cap, and tiny tail frame the bird's compact shape. The long bill is straight or slightly upturned. Rusty feathers near the lower belly and beneath the tail are normal, even though the common name emphasizes white. [1]
Watch how it grips the trunk
Nuthatches move upward, sideways, and headfirst down bark without using the tail as a brace. Their neck often stretches outward for a look around. Compare our Brown Creeper guide while practicing the shapes and movements of woodland bark feeders. [1]
Life history
How This Bird Lives
Where to look
Inspect the trunks and main limbs of large deciduous trees. Nasal calls often reveal a bird working around the far side of a branch. Winter feeding flocks may include nuthatches alongside Tufted Titmice and chickadees. [3]
Food & foraging
The bill probes bark crevices for insects and spiders. Seeds and nuts also enter the diet. Large items may be wedged into bark and hammered open; other morsels are hidden individually beneath loose bark for later use. [2]
A woodland cavity becomes a nursery
The female builds inside a natural hole, an abandoned woodpecker cavity, or occasionally a nest box. She uses bark, fur, grass, feathers, and other soft materials. The birds may enlarge an existing opening, but rarely excavate an entire cavity themselves. [2]
Clutches contain 5–9 eggs. The female incubates while the male brings food, and both parents feed the chicks. Reported nestling periods vary, so a single day count is not a reliable deadline for every nest. Please observe occupied cavities from a distance. [2] [4]

A Closer Look at White-breasted Nuthatches
A name about opening food
The nuthatch name recalls wedging nuts into bark and striking them to expose the food inside. A trunk serves as both a hunting surface and a workbench for opening tough seeds. [3]
Benefits of familiar neighbors
Pairs often stay together year-round and join other small birds to forage in winter. In one study, nuthatches became more cautious when titmice were removed from their feeding flock. [3]
Unusual nest housekeeping
Adults sometimes sweep the nest entrance and interior with a crushed insect held in the bill. Insect chemicals may help discourage predators, but that proposed function should not be treated as certain. [4]
