A secretive rail that walks through marsh vegetation, often flicking its short tail upward.

Three Identification Clues

A small, chickenlike rail with long toes and a short, thick bill.

Adults have a yellow bill, grayish face and breast, and a black face and throat patch.

Patterned brown upperparts, white flank bars, and white beneath the frequently raised short tail.
