What defines this habitat?

A savanna combines an open ground layer of grasses and wildflowers with scattered trees. In the Midwest, oak savannas are especially familiar. Enough light passes between the trees to support many sun-loving plants.

Clues to look for

  • Look for widely spaced trees rather than a continuous closed canopy.
  • Notice grassy openings between patches of shade.
  • Open-grown oaks often have broad, spreading branches.

Did you know?

Savannas contain a patchwork of sunny and shaded conditions. That changing light creates room for plants with different needs.

Living things to notice

Look for prairie plants in openings and shade-tolerant plants nearer trees. Oaks also offer food and shelter for insects and birds.

Try this on your next walk

Compare the plants beneath one tree with those growing out in the open. Where does the vegetation change?
