Through Miller Woods to Lake Michigan: wetlands, oak savanna, dunes, and wildlife along the way.
The Douglas Center is the starting point for a walk that changes character as it approaches the lake. Brian’s photographs follow the ponds and wooded trails through the seasons, with close looks at the flowers, birds, and animals encountered along the way.

A gateway to Miller Woods
The center is in the Miller neighborhood of Gary and is part of Indiana Dunes National Park. The Paul H. Douglas Trail passes wetlands and globally rare black oak savanna before reaching open dunes and the Lake Michigan beach.
The shorter Douglas Center loop is about 0.9 mile. For the longer outing, NPS describes a 3.4-mile beach hike, including the return. Beyond the wetland junction, the route to the lake is an out-and-back, crossing the Grand Calumet River before continuing through the dunes.
Inside the center, exhibits, live animals, and environmental education programs introduce the surrounding habitats. The Nature Play Zone gives children a place to explore through outdoor play. Check NPS for current building hours and scheduled programs.
Follow the landscape through open woods, ponds, boardwalks, sandy dunes, and the lakeshore. Photographs from different seasons show green summer growth, autumn color, and snow along the water.

Look closely at the flowers along the route: gentians, lilies, lupine, milkweed, spotted beebalm, and more. A cactus in the sand and a puffball on the woodland floor add two very different discoveries.

The bird photographs are grouped together here, from woodpeckers and songbirds to herons, ducks, and other waterbirds. These are moments from past visits; the species you encounter will vary with season and conditions.

Beavers, muskrats, raccoons, and coyotes appear around the wetlands, while deer move through the trees and grasses. Reptiles, amphibians, and insects reward a slower look along the trail. Give wildlife space and let animals choose their own route.

Before you go
The trailhead is at 100 North Lake Street in Gary, Indiana. Use the official NPS center and trail pages below for directions, maps, building hours, and current access information.
Allow roughly 30 minutes for the easy 0.9-mile center loop or about two hours for the moderate 3.4-mile beach hike. Sand and changing trail conditions can make the longer route more demanding.
NPS lists the center, restrooms, and walkway to the marsh boardwalk and picnic tables as wheelchair accessible; the hiking trails are not. Water and restrooms are available in the center during opening hours.
Miller Woods can experience intermittent flooding. Consult the current conditions page before setting out, stay on marked trails, and bring water and sun protection for the open dunes and shore. Follow current NPS guidance on fees and passes.
