Nicholson Wildlife Refuge

A short boardwalk visit with time to watch the wetland birds.

Caledonia / Franksville • Racine County, Wisconsin

Brian’s take: Nicholson is worth a quick stop, especially for birdwatching. On his visits, the boardwalk led into the wetland and dead-ended before reaching the lake. Come for a quiet look around and a chance to spot birds rather than a long hike.

A small outing, a closer look

Let the birds set the pace

The 127.4-acre refuge is a Village of Caledonia property with marshland along Hoosier Creek. Its wetland setting offers a different kind of outing from a park with miles of interconnected hiking trails.

Brian’s bird photographs include a Swamp Sparrow close to the water, a Song Sparrow on a branch, a bright Nashville Warbler, and an American Coot tucked among the stems. The close views are a reminder that there can be plenty to notice even on a short walk.

Plan a quick stop

Getting there

1210 5 Mile Road, Caledonia, Wisconsin, in the Franksville area. The entrance is on 5 Mile Road between Highway H and Nicholson Road.

What to expect

Brian recommends Nicholson for birdwatching and a short wetland visit. The boardwalk stopped before the lake during his visits; don’t plan on a lakeside loop or a long hiking route.

Water changes the walk

Local park descriptions note that parts of the route are often flooded. Check conditions and posted signs, and turn around if water or damage makes the route unsafe.

Bring binoculars

A camera or binoculars will help you enjoy birds from the path. Pause quietly, watch between the stems, and leave wildlife room to go about its day.

Birds of the wetland

Four encounters from Brian’s visits. Sightings vary with the season, water level, and a little patience.

The boardwalk in green

Fresh leaves and tall wetland plants frame the walkway, with bridges, bends, and open-water views along the way.

Small discoveries along the way

A wooded stream, tiny moss capsules, and the entrance sign round out the visit.
