A coastal landscape beside the city

Kenosha Sand Dunes lies just south of Kenosha’s Southport Park, in Pleasant Prairie. It is the northernmost unit of Chiwaukee Prairie State Natural Area, where open sand and grass-covered dunes meet Lake Michigan.

This small photo collection follows sandy trails and the lakeshore, then looks closer at monarchs, milkweed, and insects among the vegetation. The open lake views and close-up discoveries show two very different scales of the same landscape.

Dunes, trails & Lake Michigan

Open sand gives way to grasses, scattered trees, and patches of shade. The photographs show narrow footpaths crossing the dunes and a trail beside the rocky shore.

Monarchs among the wildflowers

Purple blazing star flowers draw attention away from the wide lake horizon. Brian’s photographs capture monarchs visiting the flower spikes, from close wing details to a wider view of two butterflies among the blooms.

Small discoveries along the way

A striped monarch caterpillar, an orange-and-black beetle, and a delicate damselfly reward a closer look at the leaves beside the trail.

Exploring Kenosha Sand Dunes

Getting there

The south trailhead is near 85th Street and 3rd Avenue in Pleasant Prairie, with limited parking. Another approach begins at Southport Park in Kenosha and follows the trail south toward the dunes. Check the official access information before choosing your starting point.

Walking the dunes

The local visitor guide describes an approximately two-mile loop. Sandy footing and exposed stretches are part of the experience. Restoration and boardwalk work may alter the route; follow current signs rather than relying on older photographs.

Protect the shoreline habitat

Use designated trails and leave plants and natural materials in place. The dunes are fragile, and shoreline erosion and restoration are ongoing concerns. Bring water and sun protection for an open, lakeside walk.

Know which area you are visiting

The dunes belong to the larger Chiwaukee Prairie natural area, but the main southern prairie entrance is a different destination. Use the dunes access information and check the DNR page for current property rules.
