How to recognize it

Follow three field clues

01 · A deeply split pink pouch
The inflated lip has darker veins and a pronounced vertical cleft at the front.

02 · Two basal leaves
Broad leaves with strong parallel veins emerge at ground level.

03 · A leafless flower stalk
Usually one flower tops a slender stalk; narrow greenish-brown petals flank the pouch. [2]

Where and when to look

Search acidic woodland, often beneath conifers or oaks. Flowering time shifts with latitude, elevation and weather. [1]

The detail worth photographing

Include the flower’s front cleft, both basal leaves and the full stalk. A second view of the surrounding woodland helps document its habitat.

Ecology

Orchid seeds depend on compatible soil fungi to establish. This close partnership helps explain why wild plants transplant poorly. [3]

A closer look

A deceptive flower

Bees may enter the pouch, but the flower offers no nectar reward. Pollination can be infrequent as bees learn to avoid unrewarding flowers. [1]

Color is only one clue

Flowers range from deep pink to pale pink, and rare plants have white flowers. Check leaf position and flower structure as well as color. [3]

Photograph it where it grows

Leave wild orchids rooted in their habitat. Their dependence on local fungi makes moving them a poor way to preserve them. [3]
